Hello lovelies, hope you had a wonderful weekend. I am back with a vengeance from a month long break from the blog which I missed terribly by the way. The month of April/May is seriously like Christmas for me with many family birthdays, parties, BBQs, Weddings, Easter; super busy yet fun.
Anyways the gist of today's post is weight gain after marriage, I was chatting to a friend today and she was complaining about the amount of weight her cousin lost for her wedding and I told her not to worry cos it is all coming back! I have seen this happen with newly weds around me myself included and the worst thing about it is that your partner 80% of the time does not notice the weight gain until you gain over 10lbs and at this point it gets harder to lose.
SOME REASONS WHY PEOPLE GAIN WEIGHT POST WEDDING
1. DE-STRESS- Wedding planning and all the stress that comes with it make people lose their appetite and when it is all over and the appetite returns and you somehow tell yourself you deserve all the indulgent treats as it is your honeymoon. What this does is it develops unhealthy eating habits and cravings that gets difficult to break as time goes on.
2. CHANGE IN EATING HABITS- Post wedding most couples adopt new eating habits together and most women tend to eat the same portion sizes as men which lead to weight gain on her part as they have different caloric allowance. While you may easily skip dinner if your are too tired to cook as a singleton and end up snacking for a meal, when you are married this hardly happens cos if one is too tired, the other might cook, order or go out for a meal. Couples also tend to eat out more or order takeaway than before marriage.
3. PRIORITIES CHANGE- Before I got married I went to the gym 5 days a week and had this routine pretty set but post-wedding, I have more stuff to do around the house and now try to make it twice a week. What a change! It is not that I don't care about being fit or looking good for my husband but life takes over and priorities change.
HOW TO STOP THE WEIGHT GAIN AND LOSE THE WEIGHT
REDUCE THE NUMBER OF TIMES YOU EAT OUT- This tip is pretty straight forward, try reducing the number of times you eat out and watch your weight reduce. Restaurants want tasty food and will do anything to make their food tasty from adding whole fat cream to sauces or butter on vegetables. Your weight is the least of their concern so avoid eating out so much, you can have a romantic and healthy dinner at home you just need to get a little creative. Believe me there is nothing a table cloth, flowers and candles can't fix ;) and if the weather is good dine Al fresco under the stars.
PRIORITISE GETTING ACTIVE- As a newly wed, life will get quite busy and if your don't plan and prioritise exercising, you will never seem have enough time. I have found working out first thing in the morning helps get it out of the way and energises you for the rest of the day. Find out what works for you.
WATCH YOUR PORTIONS-
Men and women have different caloric allowance based on their gender, size and activity levels. It is very easy to eat a lot more when the person you are eating with requires a lot more food than you do. As a rule I say women should eat a 3rd of their husbands portion or measure your food and make sure you are eating within your caloric limits.
WHEN YOU ARE NOT WITH YOUR OTHER HALF EAT EXTREMELY
HEALTHY
This tip has really helped me keep my weight in check. My husband and I are foodies and love nice dinners so when we are not together I try to eat light and healthy to keep my caloric intake low enough to have a nice big dinner and not worry about gaining weight.
DONT FEEL THE NEED TO EAT THE SAME FOOD- As men and women have different caloric allowance, they also have different food and nutrient needs. A 160lbs male bricklayer needs a higher carb diet compared to his 130lbs office worker wife that is mostly sedentary as she does not require as much carbs because of the nature of her job. Something that has really helped me is to swap my complex carbs like bread or white ricewith simple carbs like vegetables or drastically reduce the amount of complex carbs in my dinners.
